Trincomalee

Temple Cliffs and an Eastern Harbour

Best: Apr – SepTwo to three daysEast Coast

Overview

Trincomalee sits on one of the world’s great natural harbours, and its history is layered with Hindu, Buddhist and colonial stories. High on Swami Rock, the Koneswaram temple looks straight down onto the ocean, and is a revered stop on the Ramayana trail. North of town, the long beaches of Nilaveli and Uppuveli are at their calmest between April and September, when the rest of the coast sees rain. Take a boat to Pigeon Island to snorkel over coral with reef sharks and turtles, or head out to look for whales and dolphins.
